3 technologies ready to advance poultry production


3D camera technology, machine vision and robotic technology could help streamline operations at poultry farms.


New technologies – from 3D cameras to machine vision to autonomous robots – are set to transform the poultry operations of tomorrow. Three innovations at the 2021 Poultry Tech Summit offer creative solutions to poultry production challenges.


1. 3D camera technology for high precision weighing of poultry


A new solution for high precision weighing of broilers uses 3D camera technology to capture both the shape and volume of the birds and can record even in the dark with its internal IR light source. In contrast to traditional electronic weighers, the camera will weigh all birds below its field-of-view.


Peter Ahrendt, Ph.D., CEO, Animoni ApS, will explain how measuring both light and heavy birds allow more accurate estimates of flock average and uniformity. These are critical basic parameters and important steppingstones on the road to the digitalization in poultry production.


2. Monitor poultry floor distribution with machine vision


In commercial bedding floor poultry houses, bird density and distribution pattern are critical factors for evaluating production management and animal health/welfare. Currently, daily routine inspection of broiler flock distribution in commercial grow-out houses is done manually, which is labor intensive and time consuming.


Lilong Chai at the University of Georgia will share how a machine vision-based method can monitor floor distribution of chickens in drinking, feeding and resting/activity zones. This study provides the basis for developing a real-time evaluation tool to detect broiler chicken floor distribution patterns, behaviors and welfare indicators in commercial production facilities.


3. Autonomous robot for cage-free layer house management


This ground-based robotic system is programmed to interact with chickens allowing it to safely navigate the house environment without harming the chickens. Wayne Daley, Ph.D., Georgia Tech Research Institute will discuss how the robot can actively sense and characterize bird status as it moves through the house.


Custom algorithms were developed enabling the robot to search the floor areas of breeder and aviary houses for floor eggs and dead birds. This robot is an intelligent system equipped with a suite of sensors including environmental sensors, 2D and 3D cameras and a small robotic arm.
