Canada's Sofina Foods' plant upgrade nears completion

Canada's Sofina Foods expects to complete the relocation of its Lilydale chicken processing operation in the Ramsay residential neighborhood in Calgary to a state-of-the-art plant in the city's southeast quadrant early next year, the company confirmed in an email to Meatingplace.

The new 304,000-square-foot, $200 million facility significantly boosts processing capacity, and the 500 existing jobs at the old plant will be transferred to the new location.

Plans for the move to a new site have been underway since 2017, when the city offered to buy the old property as part of a plan to accommodate an expansion of Calgary's elevated train line.

"We are excited about the move to our new facility and look forward to transitioning our current employees over to the new site as they continue their important work feeding Canadians," Sofina Foods said in its statement.

The Markham, Ontario-based company has been in an expansion mode. Earlier this year, Sofina announced an agreement to buy pork and seafood supplier Eight Fifty Food Group in Europe.

Sofina Foods has a broad portfolio of branded and private label pork, beef, fish, turkey and chicken products. The company operates 16 HACCP-approved manufacturing facilities, two distribution centers and three hatcheries.
