KFC launches chicken-free chicken burger

KFC Malaysia has launched its Zero Chicken Burger, a plant-based and meatless burger that promises the flavour of Colonel’s secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices, but which has no chicken.

According to the fastfood chain, this is a limited offering ” satisfy Malaysians’ growing appetite for new variety and options in the food they enjoy.” The chicken-free chicken burger has been created in collaboration with meat substitute brand Quorn and carries a halal-certified meat-free patty, which, according to KFC Malaysia, is high in protein, high in fibre, low in saturated fat, and contains no cholesterol.

The meat-free patty is coated in KFC’s secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices and fried, topped with a sliced cheese and lettuce, drizzled with Spicy BBQ sauce and mayonnaise, and then placed between a toasted sesame bun. The company has noted, however, that the burger is neither neither vegan nor vegetarian as “it is freshly prepared sharing the same cooking equipment as other KFC products.”

Bioprinting chicken nuggets in Russia

KFC and Moscow-based 3D bioprinting solutions want to create chicken nuggets by means of bioprinting technology. The project aims to create the world’s first laboratory-produced chicken nuggets made of chicken cells and plant material.

“In the recent years, meat-free protein alternatives have been gaining traction with more people opening up to alternative protein sources. This led to the creation of the ‘Zero Chicken’ concept – a chicken-less burger that tastes unmistakably and satisfyingly KFC!” said Evelyn Ng, deputy GM marketing of KFC Malaysia.
